José Padilha is a Brazilian film director, writer, and producer. He was born on August 1, 1967, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Padilha graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with a degree in politics, economics, and philosophy. He later studied at the San Francisco State University in California, where he obtained a degree in film directing.

Padilha is best known for his work in the crime thriller genre. He gained international recognition for directing the critically acclaimed Brazilian films Elite Squad (2007) and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010). He also directed the American remakes of the sci-fi classic RoboCop (2014) and the action-thriller Seven Days in Entebbe (2018).
